Dutch National Park the Biesbosch
Biesbosch, a fairly large nature reserve, partly on and opposite to the Island
of Dordrecht. In former days the whole Biesbosch was part of the province of
South-Holland and Dordrecht but in the 19th century part of the Biesbosch was
assigned to the province of North-Brabant. The river New Merwede flows now between
the northern and southern part of it.
The Biesboch came into existence in the 15th century, during the St. Elizabeth
Floods in 1421, and is the furthest inland body of water where the tides are
still experienced. Until the 60s the tide between ebb and flood had a difference
of almost 3 meters, after the finishing of the Delta works the difference is
about 1 meter.
